***This is a work in progress***
I have reviewed thousands and thousands of Mary Pickford photos. Sometimes, but not always, deciphering photo codes / negative numbers can help identify a photographer or film if one is unaware of just who or which it is. I can not stress "sometimes" enough as often times these codes were simply omitted, added by completely different entities, duplicated, or even different depending on those entities all together. With that said, here is a list of some of the most common codes (not all) that might help in some cases if you're trying to identify something.
Reference portraits originating from Mary (and ultimately sold off with her Estate) were often dated by year -- the first digits, a catalog number, and sometimes had a photographer code at the end. Since there are a ton of such photos out there, they may be worth noting:
H: George Hurrell
J.M.: John Miehle
L.B.: Lansing Brown
O.R.: K. O. Rahmn
P.D.: Preston Duncan
R.B.: Russell Ball
