Mary Pickford - Melbourne Spurr Photos
“Mary Pickford,” says Melbourne Spurr, “always comes back to me, so I guess she thinks I’m not a bad photographer.”
Mary Pickford herself helped launch Melbourne Spurr's Hollywood photography career having been so impressed with his work shooting her for Fred Hartsook studio. It can be said that any photographer's career would get a boost if they shot Mary as that in itself was rather marketable at the time, but for Spurr, the quality of his Pickford portraits created a feverish interest -- so much so, that sittings would have to be booked months in advance. He would go on to photograph many stars in the 20s for his own studio, but branched out to other subjects by the decade's end.

All-Star Production of Patriotic Episodes for the Second Liberty Loan - Photographs - 1917

All-Star Production of Patriotic Episodes for the Second Liberty Loan photograph. 1917. Typewritten snipe on verso reads, "Use will be appreciated by Uncle Sam / From Pete Schmid / Uncle Sam's All-Star Photoplay / The greatest collection of stars ever assembled in one production either on screen or stage is evidenced in the photoplay recently staged to stimulate interest in the Second Liberty Loan. In this film Mary Pickford turns bandit and at the point o Bill Hart's own famous six-shooter relieves Douglas Fairbanks, Hart, Julian Eltinge and Theodore Roberts of their possessions in the way of Liberty Bonds. Many other interesting features are presented in this picture by 'stars' not only of the screen and stage, but of civic life as well including President Wilson, Secretary McAdoo, Thomas Edison, David Warfield, John Drew, Billie Burke, Wilton Lackaye, Lillian Russell, Pauline Frederick and many other celebrities."
