Mary Pickford on the cover of Simmons Magazine - April 1910

Mary Pickford on the cover of the April, 1910 issue of Simmons Magazine (NY.) Can this be the first magazine cover to feature the then Biograph actress? I cannot say with all certainty, but it’s the earliest I’ve ever seen and I would say it quite possibly is. (If my memory is correct, the previous earliest that I have seen would be the December 3, 1911 issue of the NY Dramatic Mirror featuring a photo by Frank C. Bangs.) As evidenced by the text on the cover, this distinctive literature features short stories, travel, and illustrated articles. Sprinkled throughout this issue are also photos of several stage actresses, including Charlotte Walker who starred in Belasco’s The Warrens of Virginia — which was Mary’s first performance on Broadway and the first time she used the name “Mary Pickford.” Unfortunately, there is no further mention of Mary within the pages beyond the cover.
