Typewritten snipe affixed to verso reads, “One of the earliest photographs taken of Mary Pickford in Toronto.....The stern expression on her face was due to the fact that the cameraman had said, ‘Look into the hole in the this little black box and you may see a little bird in there.” Mary Pickford.....’Though he must think me crazy to believe that a bird could live in there — I don’t like that foolish man.’”
